This collection contains research compiled by Mary Lucile Chapman on Joseph Habersham (1751-1815) sometime in the 1960s to 1970s. Also included is a draft of the unpublished manuscript that Chapman wrote on the life of Habersham. Joseph Habersham was a Revolutionary War soldier, member of the Continental Congress, mayor of Savannah, Georgia, and served as Postmaster General of the United States.

Joseph Habersham (July 28, 1751 – November 17, 1815) was an American businessman, Georgia politician, soldier in the Continental Army, and Postmaster General of the United States. Born in Savannah, Georgia, he attended preparatory schools and Princeton College and became successful merchant and planter. Habersham was a member of the council of safety and the Georgia Provincial Council in 1775 and a major of a battalion of Georgia militiamen and subsequently a colonel in the 1st Georgia Regime...

Mary Lucile Chapman was born in Louisa, Kentucky in 1901. She received her education at the University of Kentucky where she earned her A.B, M.A., and PhD degrees. During her long career in education she served as a curriculum consult for the Ashland, Kentucky public schools and worked as a history professor at the following schools: Marshall College, East Tennessee State College, Piedmont College, and Jacksonville State University.
